community lanterns project

about the project

The Community Lanterns Project celebrates 24 years of bringing light to the heart of the Lismore city. The Lismore Lantern Parade is Lismore’s iconic signature event, and is a tradition in the true sense of the word.

The Community Lanterns Project provides opportunities for people to celebrate, have fun and express themselves in a creative way, while raising the profile of their local charities and community organisations, and the businesses supporting them.

about the year's lantern parade project

This year’s event will focus in and around the Lismore Quad and the adjacent Fredrick's Car Park. The parade itself will culminate at Fredricks’ Car Park. It will mean simplifying the fiery finale, but we will create something very new and special. We look to the community to support us and become involved – an event where everyone can immerse themselves in the magic of our wonderful Lantern Parade!

This year's theme celebrates our WONDERLAND providing an opportunity for parade participants to dress up in wonderland inspired costumes or decorate their lanterns with wonderland themes – with everything from Alice, to celestial, winter to fantasy - and lots and lots of fairy lights!!

In coming weeks we will be asking people to VOTE for their favourite lanterns through the Lismore App and our dedicated Facebook page with the top 20 voted lanterns displayed around the Quad festival site. People will be able to have an up close and personal experience with the lanterns and take the inevitable ‘selfie’, upload the photo to our Facebook page and the Lismore App to WIN!

The Market deLight will be moving to the new Lismore Quadrangle and adjacent Magellan Street. The Quadrangle is bounded by the Lismore Regional Gallery, Lismore Library and the Northern Rivers Conservatorium. It is a beautiful new public gathering space for the community in the heart of our city.

An area in Carrington Street will also run as a Youth Hub, with activities, food and market stalls with a youth focus.

how does the community project work?

  • Community groups nominate to participate in the parade by completing the community projects booking form below.
  • Once the booking form has been confirmed the community group is responsible for carrying the LightnUp feature lantern/s. Generally each feature lantern requires 6-8 people with opportunity for another 12-14 people to join in the parade with small lanterns, musical instruments, fairy lights, costumes etc adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
  • The Community group approaches a business to sponsor them to carry a LightnUp lantern/s, or a business nominates a community group it would like to support.
  • We find a lantern that fits in with your organisation or you nominate your favourite lantern to carry.
  • A placard bearing the name of the sponsor and/or the community group is carried in front of the lanterns and will be provided.
  • Final numbers of participants in the group must be provided prior to the event.
  • The Community Lantern sponsors and organisations are acknowledged in the media, the Parade Website, the dedicated Lantern Parade Facebook page and in the event program.

how much does it cost?

  • Participation in the Community Lantern Project is $385.00 (inc gst) which assists in the cost of maintaining and constructing the lanterns and general production of the Lismore Lantern Parade.
  • If there is a reason to not be in the parade because of financial constraints, please contact Jyllie Jackson, Creative Director, to discuss.
  • Please note all parade participants, (up to 20 adult lanterneers) receive a wristband, which will give them access to the reserved area sitting on the ground in Fredricks’ car park. It is a flat area so standing only at the rear.
  • As there is no ticketed seating participants are requested to drop a donation in the buckets to help with the costs of the event.

what do i need to bring on the night?

  • Bring tarps/cushions to sit on the ground.
  • Camp chairs can be placed in the designated area at the BACK of the reserved area.
