community lanterns project

about the project

The Community Lanterns Project celebrates 25 years of bringing light to the heart of the Lismore city. The Lismore Lantern Parade is Lismore’s iconic signature event, and is a tradition in the true sense of the word.

The Community Lanterns Project provides opportunities for people to celebrate, have fun and express themselves in a creative way, while raising the profile of their local charities and community organisations, and the businesses supporting them.

about the year's lantern parade project

This year's event will focus in and around the Lismore Quadrangle and the adjacent Fredericks Car Park. The parade itself will culminate at Federicks Car Park where we will come together to enjoy the fiery finale. We look to the community to support us and become involved - an event where everyone can immerse themselves in the magic of our wonderful Lantern Parade.

This year's theme is an expression of the many 'rivers of light' created by LightnUp's hundreds of lantern parade processions and community events across Australia over the last 25 years. Just as each little river of light stretches across the land so it is invited to return back to its source at the Lismore Lantern Parade - Rivers of Light.

how does the community project work?

  • Community groups nominate to participate in the parade by completing the community projects booking form below.
  • Once the booking form has been confirmed the community group is responsible for carrying the LightnUp feature lantern/s. Generally each feature lantern requires 6-8 people with opportunity for another 12-14 people to join in the parade with small lanterns, musical instruments, fairy lights, costumes etc adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
  • The Community group approaches a business to sponsor them to carry a LightnUp lantern/s, or a business nominates a community group it would like to support.
  • We find a lantern that fits in with your organisation or you nominate your favourite lantern to carry.
  • A placard bearing the name of the sponsor and/or the community group is carried in front of the lanterns and will be provided.
  • Final numbers of participants in the group must be provided prior to the event.
  • The Community Lantern sponsors and organisations are acknowledged in the media, the Parade Website, the dedicated Lantern Parade Facebook page and in the event program.

how much does it cost?

  • Participation in the Community Lantern Project is $385.00 (inc gst) which assists in the cost of maintaining and constructing the lanterns and general production of the Lismore Lantern Parade.
  • If there is a reason to not be in the parade because of financial constraints, please contact Jyllie Jackson, Creative Director, to discuss.
  • Please note all parade participants, (up to 20 adult lanterneers) receive a wristband, which will give them access to the reserved area sitting on the ground in Fredricks’ car park. It is a flat area so standing only at the rear.
  • As there is limited ticketed grandstand seating participants are requested to drop a donation in the buckets to help with the costs of the event.

what do i need to bring on the night?

  • Bring tarps/cushions to sit on the ground.
  • Camp chairs can be placed in the designated area at the BACK of the reserved area.
